In 1745, the Englishwoman Hannah Snell, disguised herself as a man, adopting the name of James Gray, and joined the army. After a while, she started at the navy as a cook’s assistant and then became a seaman. She fought in naval battles and was considered a courageous sailor. Snell eventually tired of a sailor’s life, and revealed her true identity. She faced lots of backlash! But afterward, she published her biography in 1750 and tarted presenting lectures about her experience.
